91 young cancer survivors and paediatric oncology volunteers in attendance from 6 European countries: Romania, Republic of Moldova, Czech Republic, Croatia, Slovakia, Serbia

The focus of the two-day intensive training session addressing volunteers that work within or wish to set up a program in paediatric oncology units was to showcase good practice examples on developing psychosocial intervention tools and instruments for working with children and teenagers with cancer in a hospital setting within a structured framework.

Main topics centered around tools for therapeutic interventions, powerful storytelling, medical play, pain management, communication, dealing with loss, ethics in media representation of patients and were followed by practical group work sessions.

During the first day of the meeting young cancer survivors from Serbia, Slovakia, Czech Republic and Croatia shared with the Romanian and Moldovan participants their personal experience in going back to the hospital as volunteers and working with current patients.

In return, they were introduced to the specificity and complexity of the intervention program Little People volunteers and specialists carry out everyday in 10 paediatric oncology wards in Romania and Republic of Moldova.

Întâlnirea Internațională a Voluntarilor Oncopediatrici

Cluj-Napoca, 19-22 martie 2015, Hotel Belvedere. Întâlnirea Internațională a Voluntarilor Oncopediatrici

Sesiunea intensivă de training organizată de Asociația Little People încurajează implementarea de tehnici inovatoare de suport pentru copii și adolescenți bolnavi de cancer de către voluntari pentru a trece dincolo de barierele cancerului și facilita creșterea complianței la tratament, scăderea anxietății și stresului față de procedurile medicale precum și o mai bună adaptare față de spitalizare și față de situația de boală în general. Mai mult, evenimentul încurajează cooperarea înternațională avînd în vedere faptul că participanții vor proveni din 5 orașe din România (Cluj-Napoca, Iași, Timișoara, București și Tg-Mureș) Republica Moldova și alte țări europene. Training-ul dorește să contribuie la formarea educațională și profesională a voluntarilor, la dezvoltarea unei atitudini civice prin voluntariat precum și la creșterea gradului de informare cu privire la situația copiilor cu cancer.

The intensive training session held by the Little People Association Romania aims to develop and discuss innovative psychosocial support techniques for children with cancer by volunteers in the area in order to overcome the disease barriers and facilitate compliance to treatment, lower anxiety levels towards medical procedures and achieve better results in patients adapting to the hospital environment.

Moreover, the event encourages international cooperation taking into consideration that the participants will come from 5 different Romanian cities as well as from the Republic of Moldova and other European cities. The training aims at contributing to the professional and educational formation of the participants as well as towards developing a civic attitude through volunteering and raising awareness by information provided in the area.
